It is easy to revert to the same old patterns and grooves when called upon to play in a certain style. The following exercises will help broaden your options when you hear the words, "this one's a shuffle." These exercises can be played with the top line played on either the hi-hat or the ride cymbal. When being played on the ride cymbal try playing the hi-hat foot on beats "2" and "4"–then try playing the hi-hat foot on all four quarter notes.
