For this issue of Percussion Sessions® I'd like to continue the Mixed Rhythm studies that we worked on in the December 2005 issue. So if you missed that one, make sure that you go into the back issues and check it out. Mixed Rhythms are when multiple subdivisions (i.e., eighths, sixteenths, triplets, etc.) are used in the same measure. The rhythms in this article are the same as the last issue. But this time we are going to work on playing them with accents and specific stickings. The accents will really bring the rhythms to life. The sticking is provided underneath each note. As before, be aware of switching from straight eighths to swing eighths and vice versa. Some of the rhythms are played the same but look different. In contrast some of the rhythms look the same but are played different. Be sure to check out the audio example played on the snare drum.

CHECK OUT THE AUDIO!!!

I hope that this article has been informative and fun. Feel free to email comments to me at michaeldrums@gmail.com.

Happy playing,
Michael
