Counting Mixed Rhythms

For this issue of Percussion Sessions® I thought I'd mix it up a little with some mixed rhythm counting exercises. Mixed Rhythms are when multiple subdivisions (i.e., eighths, sixteenths, triplets, etc..) are used in the same measure. These can be challenging to execute accurately, but with a some faithful practice they can become second nature and really open up your playing. The counting exercises provided will focus on mixing whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, straight eighths, swing eighths, eighth note triplets, and sixteenth notes all together. The counting is provided underneath each note. Counting inside the parentheses, ( ), are provided as a guide and do NOT belong to a rhythm being play, but exist "inside" of the previous note value.

Be aware of switching from straight eighths to swing eighths and vice versa. Some of the rhythms are played the same but look different. In contrast some of the rhythms look the same but are played different. See if you can spot them. Since the focus is on being able to read and count the rhythms, there are no accents...yet. Be sure to check out the audio example played on the snare drum.
