Hemiolas

A hemiola is a rhythmic divice that gives the illusion of playing in a different meter or subdivision than the one in which the music is based upon. For example, playing every third quarter note in a 4/4 time signiture or accenting every third eighth note. The ablity to move freely within a time signiture is a skill that drummers used to add interest and movement to the music. I've provided the counting below the staff. The first set are to be played using straight 8ths and the second set is swung.
