Hemiolas

A hemiola is a rhythmic divice that gives the illusion of playing in a different meter or subdivision than the one in which the music is based upon. For example, playing every third quarter note in a 4/4 time signiture or accenting every third eighth note. The ablity to move freely within a time signiture is a skill that drummers used to add interest and movement to the music. I've provided the counting below the staff.
