Singing and Four Way Coordination
Part 2: Moving the Bass Drum
by Bill Stuhlly
In part 2 of this technique you’re going to move the bass drum around the rhythm. The secret to this co-ordination is hearing each individual rhythm. The way this is accomplished is by singing each part separately while playing the pattern.
In exercise #1 we’re going to add two 8th notes to the beginning of the phrase.
EX#1
By this time you should be able to play the RIDE/SNARE pattern in your sleep, so use that Autopilot function for now to line up the BASS rhythm. Once you’re comfortable with the co-ordination, sing each part while continuing the pattern. Start with the new rhythm first (BASS)
- BASS
- SNARE
- RIDE
- H.H. w/FOOT
Before moving to the next exercise make sure you can sing each part and play comfortably while doing so. Take on 1 exercise per practice session. Here’s a few more moving just the BASS rhythm.

Remember: only move on to the next rhythm once you can sing all the parts comfortably.
